3 career lessons to ace 2024 (from Arisers)

Welcome to Arise Leadership: Where women learn actionable ways to have a voice at the table and get promoted faster.

Hi Reader,

Happy 2024! I’m glad we’re entering a new year together. 🎉

🔈 New fireside chat alert!!!!

I met Vivienne Wei, Salesforce COO, 7 years ago at an HBS alum circle. Since then, she’s been a friend and inspiration.

I’m very excited to announce that she’ll be joining us for a candid (virtual) conversation on February 1st.

She’ll share:

🔹 Her path to Salesforce COO
🔹 Strategies she uses to command power as the only woman in the room
🔹 How she navigates a successful career with motherhood.

Onto the goods now…

To kickstart the year, I find it fitting to share some wisdom bombs from Arise Leadership’s recent cohort.

This particular group of go-getters was dynamic, focused, and unbelievably committed to helping each other win.

In our weekly discussions, we touched upon tons of topics that are often missing from career conversations. But here at Arise, we know that it is these things that impact our growth the most.

So here are 3 lessons that will help you climb up the career ladder faster:

#1 What to do when not included in meetings or critical discussions?

  • Reach out to your manager and explain why it’s important for you to be in certain meetings due to your expertise: “I have valuable context on [topic] and can assist with any questions that arise.”
  • If your manager doesn’t include you in a meeting you’ve requested, consider asking for their reasoning. Helps you start a conversation around this.
  • If you’re missing crucial information from meetings you haven’t been invited to, let your manager know you have suggestions based on your current knowledge: “Here are my suggestions based on what I know. Please inform me if I’m missing any details.”

This shows your need for involvement in those discussions.

#2 How do I ensure my name is visible to the people who will drive the conversation to decide my promotion?

  • Instead of focusing on top-to-bottom recognition, start a culture of peer-to-peer recognition. Give authentic shoutouts to your colleagues who are doing outstanding work.
  • This helps build stronger rapport and you’re seen as someone who elevates the team.
  • Proactively respond to queries, and concerns, and share helpful updates and experiential learning.

#3 How to advocate for myself when I’m working on a project?

  • Ensure that you’re making time to speak to all stakeholders and allies about how you’re driving the project forward. It’s important to communicate your impact at set intervals.

If you hand off comms to someone else, you’re also handing off being visible to decision-makers.
  • Highlight how project updates impact them and the business in the long term. “Here’s how we’re moving forward with [project] and I’m very excited about how it’ll improve our market position.”

Which tip resonated the most with you? Reply to this email and let me know. I read every response.

See you next Thursday! 🙋‍♀️

Shivani
