Do you feel like you’re not qualified enough? 😔

Welcome to the Arise Leadership Newsletter: Where women learn actionable ways to have a voice at the table and get promoted faster.

Hi Reader,

Self-rejection is the primary reason for slow or stunted career growth and there are a lot of ways we hold ourselves back.

It manifests as:

  • “I’m not qualified enough to lead this project.”

Even though you’ve been working in the domain for some years.

  • “I’m not the domain expert on this topic so I cannot present my recommendation.”

Even though you have important information to make your suggestion.

  • “I’m not ready to be promoted.”

Even though you’ve gained the necessary skills by working on projects beyond your job description.

Such inner narratives hurt our careers because most of the time we are coming from a place of fear.

Here’s how unstuck yourself and move ahead:

1. Figure out the requirements

If you feel that you aren't qualified enough for a particular thing, find out what will make you qualified.

Some things you might want to look at are:

  • What kind of tasks are people doing in a senior role?
  • What skills do they display on a day-to-day basis?
  • Where do you stand in your competency profile?

This data is crucial in realizing whether you are assuming things or there is a skill gap.

2. Evaluate yourself based on the collected data

We often compare ourselves to people who are 10 or even 100 steps ahead of us. That makes us feel like we cannot move up or aren’t ready for that.

Instead of simply assuming, do an exercise called — “Where do I stand?”

Once you know the requirements, assess how many of them you are able to tick off.

Use past feedback, performance reviews, and feedback from mentors and colleagues to make the assessment. This will clearly show where you are and where you need to go.

Then, you can create a roadmap to get there.

3/ Trust yourself and put yourself out there

When we do this exercise during Arise cohorts, members are pleasantly surprised to realize that they were only assuming that they aren’t ready or qualified.

Others feel confident that they now know what they need to do to get to the next level.

I’ve seen so so many amazing transformations in women when they join Arise.

This activity helps build faith in your skillset. The final step is to convert that faith into action, trust your instincts and put yourself out there.

Raise your hand. Apply for a project. Ask for a raise.

Trust data, don’t self-reject!
