Do you struggle with not being heard?

Welcome to the Arise Leadership Newsletter: Where women learn actionable ways to have a voice at the table and get promoted faster.

Hi Reader,

Do you resonate with either of these?

  • Under-confidence in putting forth your ideas or speaking up in meetings
  • Not being heard when you do put forth your perspective
  • Misalignment in expectations
  • Not being able to build your leadership brand

Here's a quick fact: All of these boil down to how you communicate your ideas.

Today, I’m covering the top techniques to get stakeholders to hear you, trust you, support you, and above all, promote you.

Dig in...

#1 It’s about them, not you

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Notice how I’ve used the word ‘communication’, not ‘talking’.

Because listening is the greater part of communicating.

Ideas that don’t resonate with the audience won’t be understood, much less championed.

👂 To understand the motivations of stakeholders, you have to listen intently. Only then can you align those motivations to your ideas.

Lead with open-ended questions and statements:

  • Tell me more, is there anything I can help with?
  • I’m all ears, I’d highly value your opinion on this.
  • What do you think of this approach?
  • Why do you disagree with this? I’d love to know your thought process.

If they’re dismissing or not listening to your idea, get curious instead of defensive.

#2 Always add rationale to your message

Most people say things without context:

“I need your help?”

“I found [an idea] for solving [problem].”

“I did not understand [expectation] properly.”

This is empty communication.

It doesn’t tell the listener anything about your effort, efficiency, or expertise.

But a simple twist to:

“I need your help with [problem]. I tried [Solution A] but it didn’t work out possibly because [reason] and now I’m finding it difficult to navigate through [an aspect of the problem]. Your expertise with [the aspect of the problem] made me think of you as the best person to get some insight on this.”

You instantly change the narrative from ‘I didn’t put any effort’ to ‘I tried and this is exactly what I need help with.’

Magical, isn’t it?

#3 Align purposes

It’s important to know what you and the other person want out of a conversation.

When going for a 1:1 meeting or a group chat, try to anticipate questions and concerns.

Remember that the sole purpose is to find a solution, not to prove yourself right.

So focus entirely on making every conversation a win-win.

Find the intersecting point →

  • Think: What information does your listener already know? What terms would they understand best? what would be their preferred outcome from this interaction?
  • Once you have an idea of this, decide: how can I align this with my agenda? what solution would both sides benefit from?
  • This answer will be your key to practicing purpose-driven communication.

Remember: there’s no such thing as over-communication. Be as transparent, consistent, and helpful as you can be.

Cheers,
Shivani
